It Causes Damage
Cleaning gutters are very important in any property, especially in Canberra. They are essential to getting rain water away from your house and prevent water damage which can end up costing you thousands of dollars in damage, and here are some reasons why:
-
Leaking Gutters – the most common cause of cleaned and uncleaned gutters. Leaks can be found during an inspection of the gutter. A leak that is not fixed can do damage the outside of your house and the gutter itself.
-
Foundation Damage – if gutters are not cleaned the water will fall along the side of your building and can soften the soil under and around which can lead to foundation cracks. In the worst cases, it can cause structural failure to your house.
-
Leaking roofs – this can occur when you gutters are not cleaned and there is no water following through the gutters. The water gathers near the gutters and leaks through your roof, causing damage and algae growth.
-
Rotten Wood – if gutters are blocked water will overflow into the building and be trapped in the gutter after rain. This moisture can cause the wood and boards to rot near the gutter and move into the attic. This may also cause the gutter to sag as the fasteners start to fail from the weight of the clogged gutter and the rotting rood. Rotting wood and gutter sag also provides an excellent entry for rodents and insects.
-
Insect infestation – moist, damp locations are insect heaven. Wood eating insects such as termites and wood ants are attracted to rotting debris that exists in an un-cleaned gutter. Also when the weather changes these insects can move into the house causing extensive damage.
-
Bush Fires – in the dry season left over debris such as leaves and branches which were washed down by the rain will all dry acting as good quality kindle. This kindle sits on metal gutter which can get extremely hot during summer and potentially causing a fire. To avoid a potential fire it is good practice to get you property cleaned in spring.

How to clean your gutters safely
We recommend having two people to clean gutters safely. One person to hold the ladder as the other one cleans. It’s not difficult but can be time consuming and you need the right equipment:
-
A-frame ladder
-
Gloves
-
Small hand rake
-
Hose
-
Garbage bag
Set the ladder within reach of the gutter and wearing your gloves begin moving the debris. If you’re not comfortable with heights you can throw the debris down and collect it later or you can throw them into the garbage bag. If you find objects that are stuck to the gutter use your hand rake to gently remove them. Remember to move the ladder along as you go and don’t try to uncomfortably reach further as this may be dangerous and also, empty the garbage bag so it doesn’t get too heavy that you lose your balance. Once larger debris is removed, hose down the small items you could not pick up and check for potential leaks in your gutter.
